Nicos Chr. Pattichis

Biography

Born in Limassol in March, 1962.
A graduate of the Lanition Gymnasium with merit, he completed his military service and studied at the University of Munich (T.U.Muenchen) from 1981 to 1988, where he was awarded an Μ.Α. and a Diplom Ingenieur und Architectur with a merit and a distinction in architecture and history of art. He worked in various university departments and took part in competitions with leading architectural firms.

In 1988 he moved back to Cyprus and joined the Phileleftheros Newspaper, Cyprus’ leading daily that was founded in 1955 by his grandfather Nicos Chr. Pattichis, whose name he bears. He moved up the ladder as the group expanded into other media ventures, becoming the island’s largest media group known as the Phileleftheros Publishers Ltd where he is the Executive Chairman.

The Group includes today the daily newspaper Phileleftheros, the daily sports newspaper Goal News as well as the English language weekly newspaper, THE CYPRUS WEEKLY.

Nicos Pattichis is the founder and publisher of 18 other publications (weekly and monthly magazines) such as Omikron – a woman’s monthly, Synthesis – an architectural, interiors and design monthly, Cosmopolitan / Cyprus, ICON – a men’s monthly, the weekly magazines Down Town and TV Mania, the recipes and gourmet monthly magazines Golden Recipes and Taste, the monthly Going Out city guide, Life – health magazine and Aeras, the bilingual traveler, amongst others.

The Group also runs three leading radio stations, SFERA, KISS and ACTIVE.

In addition the Organisation has a quality books and coffee table publications division. The series “Phileleftheros History & Culture Library” eg includes noteworthy works on culture, education and history, such as the seven volume “1955 – 2012: The 50 Years of the Republic of Cyprus” and the four volume “History of Cyprus for Beginners”.

He is Chairman of the publishing company Mediamorfosis Ltd, Chairman of the board of PROTEAS Press Ltd. (the largest, state-of-the-art printers in Cyprus) as well as Chairman of the company H&A Paper Ltd (the main importer and distributor of paper and newsprint). The Group is one of the two major shareholders of island’s only distribution agency KRONOS Ltd, where N. Pattichis is a board member.

He is also involved in the world’s major mass media organizations such as the Cyprus Association of Publishers, the World Association of Publishers, the Commonwealth Press Union etc.

He is a supporter of the fine arts, both as an individual but also through his media group, through the publication of books and exhibition catalogues of various institutions, universities, Cypriot, Greek and foreign artists. He also offers support as a media sponsor for the most significant drama, music, dance, art and other events, the main criterion being quality.

He has an important collection of contemporary art, consisting primarily of works by Cyprus and Greek artists, but also from abroad. Important landmarks were the exhibitions “Where do we go from here?” in May 2008, where works from the Collection of Nicos Chr. Pattichis and the Phileleftheros newspaper were exhibited at the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre at the invitation of the Minister of Education and Culture, as well as the recent exhibition, UTOPIA in May 2012, at the Evagoras Lanitis Centre in Limassol, where new acquisitions of the Collection were exhibited.

In the past few years, works from his collection have been exhibited as part of international events and exhibitions at major museums and galleries throughout the world.

Last year for example, Cyprus’ participation at the Venice Biennale (Marianna Christofides) forms part of his collection. Art pieces have also featured in exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Athens Museum of Contemporary Art and the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessalonica.

This year, works from the collection were among other chosen by noted curators for the Adelaide Biennale in Australia (also cover of the catalogue) the Sao Paolo Biennale, The Brussels Bozart, the big exhibition taking now place in Cyprus at the Nicosia Municipal Art Centre to mark the island’s Presidency of the E.U. etc.

He has also built up a noteworthy contemporary design collection made up of one off and limited edition pieces by Zaha Hadid, Ron Arad, Campana Brothers, Tom Dixon, Ettore Sottsass, Dale Chihuly etc.
Some five years ago he registered CYCO (The Cyprus Contemporary Art Museum) – a private, non profit organization, aiming to build bridges with museums in Europe and large art fairs abroad, as well as to support young artists, mainly from Cyprus.

He also owns the art gallery “Omikron Gallery” in Nicosia, Cyprus.

This year, he was part of the selection committee for DESTE prize 2013 in Athens.

He is married to Myrna Demetriou Pattichis and they have two daughters, India Olympia and Cassandra Isidora.
